Creating Family History Crafts

Creating family history crafts can be a great way to bring your family together. Sometimes I know I get so caught up in making the perfect project, that I forget why I am doing it. Today I want to talk about a very fun project I did with my daughter (Miss E) that was not perfect, but meant so much to us.

Smash book created by Miss E at 5 years old

A couple of years ago we went to a family reunion, and we got our first Smash Books to take with us. If you are not familiar with these they are small scrapbooks that are intended to be used for a little bit of everything. They already have great decorative paper in them, so there is no need to worry about getting fancy. They are great for ticket stubs, maps, stickers and any other piece of ephemera you come across.

The nice thing about taking these to the reunion was we could collect bits and pieces along the way, and talk about our family history as we went along. These books are not so much about the photos and embellishments, as much as recording what was happening at the time. More like a journal.

Heritage Mini Scrapbook Album

DSC_0243Today I want to share with you a mini scrapbook album I made honoring my great grandmother, Nellie Gamble Cox. She was a very kind woman who I was fortunate to have until I was 28 years old. What a blessing to have a great- grandparent that long. I wish I had lived closer to her, but I always loved visiting with her. She made the best yeast rolls!

For this album I used a chipboard album that I got from Michaels. I loved the bird shape, but I must say it was not the easiest shape to work with 🙂 I first put scrapbook adhesive  on the chipboard, then added the decorative paper. I trimmed all the paper using an Exacto knife.I then used pictures from all during her life, as well as a scan of her wedding invitation.

This album was so fun to do. I will post another album I did in this shape for my other great grandmother at another time.

Thank you so much for stopping by! If you have made any crafts using old photos of your own, I would love to see them.
